Brent Watanabe: One Tethered Bird

Seattle artist Brent Watanabe pushes the boundaries of contemporary art by seamlessly blending his background in traditional materials—such as drawing and sculpture—with cutting-edge technologies, including computer programming, robotics, and video game engines. Through this innovative approach, Watanabe creates work that not only challenges the viewer’s perception but also invites reflection on our complex relationship with nature, animals, and technology.

The Cornish Humanities and Sciences department presents a special literary reading by Putsata Reang. Putsata Reang is a Seattle-based nonfiction writer and journalist whose memoir Ma and Me was the winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association prize for nonfiction and a finalist for both a Dayton Literary Peace Prize and a Lambda Literary Prize. Event included a reading from the author, a short Q&A, as well as reading from a current Cornish student.

The Cornish Humanities and Sciences department presents a special literary reading by Anne de Marcken. Anne is the author of the recent novel It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over, which I can only describe as Samuel Beckett meets road trips meets zombie apocalypse! The book won the Novel Prize--the coolest and most prestigious small press prize for fiction, in my opinion--and was also recently named the winner of The Ursula K. Le Guin Fiction Prize. Event included a reading from the author, a short Q&A, as well as reading from a current Cornish student.

Visiting Artist Series: Sheldon Scott

Join us for an inspiring artist lecture by Sheldon Scott, a multifaceted artist whose work explores the intersections of race, sexuality, and economic forces. Born and raised in Pawley’s Island in the Gullah/Geechee Lowcountry of South Carolina, Scott now resides in Washington, DC, where his practice spans performance, sculpture, installation, photography, drawing, and film. Scott’s critically acclaimed work challenges mythologies of Black male supernaturality and has been showcased at prestigious venues such as the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Delaware State University, Art Miami, and the David C. Driskell Center. His pieces are included in the collections of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. A dynamic speaker and thought leader, Scott has been a TEDx Mid-Atlantic presenter and a finalist for the National Portrait Gallery’s 2019 Outwin-Boochever Portrait Competition. He is also the Global Head of Purpose at Eaton Workshop and serves on the boards of several cultural and educational organizations.
